Get ready for the spooky season!! 🎃

Personally, I love all the seasons (I just can't pick a favourite!) and I like to organize my To Be Read (TBR) shelf with books that I feel just fit the ~vibe~

So here's a list of all the books that I think would be cool to read in the fall! I tried to pick those that were more mystery/thriller-based, but mainly this is what I plan to read in the next 3 months. Will I actually get around to reading all of these? Probably not, but I'm an overachiever so we shall see.

I've organized this list by the number of books the series has, then the level of completion. Click on the book cover image to go to its Goodreads page!

First up, we got some standalones:

1. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Genres: Young Adult, Contemporary, Mystery, Thriller, Romance

Pages: 242

It's a summer book but I couldn't get around to reading it so this is basically my last little summer hurrah before diving into spooky season. However, it is a mystery/thriller so I think it will be a good transition. Anyways, it's about a rich, distinguished family that spends their summers on a private island. Cadence, the eldest grandchild, suffers an accident on the island but doesn't remember anything about it. So now she's back after 2 years and is trying to piece together the mystery!

2. House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig

Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Fairy Tale Retelling, Romance, Mystery, Horror, Gothic

Pages: 403

Remember Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses? Yeah, take that but make it horror. Like kill off 4 sisters in tragic "accidents" and have a murderer on the loose that may be wanting to kill you while you try to unravel the mystery kind of horror. I've been told that this book will make you want to sleep with the lights on, and if that doesn't scream spooky season, I don't know what does.

3. The Grace Year by Kim Ligget

Genres: Young Adult, Dystopia, Feminism, Thriller

Pages: 416

This book gives me major The Hunger Games and The Handmaid's Tale vibes. Basically, the girls in Garner County are raised to believe that they have immense beauty that lures men from their beds and drives women mad with jealousy. So, they are banished to survive in the wild for a year to release their "magic" and be purified for marriage. But the greatest threat for these young girls is not the poachers waiting to sell them on the black market, but each other. Honestly, the touch of realism is what makes this even more creepy.

Now, let's do some series! These are all fully-completed series, so I will definitely be binge-reading.

4. A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

Genres: Young Adult, Urban Fantasy, Fairy Tale Retelling, Romance

Series: Cursebreakers Trilogy

Honestly, the covers looked amazing and that's the main reason I bought them. Also, it's a Beauty and the Beast retelling and I've seen some good reviews. Harper, the main character, lives in Washinton, D.C and is then pulled into the magical world of the cursed Prince Rhen, a vicious monster hell-bent on destroying everything in his path. But as Harper spends more time with Rhen, she realizes that there is more than breaking his curse to save his people from utter ruination.

5. Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Witches, Magic, Romance

Series: Serpent & Dove Trilogy

The last book just came out this July which means I can finally binge-read this! So, a witch and a witch-hunter are forced to get married and you can bet that this has the spice and tension of enemies-to-lovers that I love!

6. Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

Genres: Young Adult, Historical Fiction, Mystery, Horror, Romance, Thriller

Series: Stalking Jack the Ripper

This series is set in 1888 Victorian London where the main character, Audrey, is a young woman interested in human sciences, a subject socially unacceptable for women in this era. However, Audrey continues to study in secret and stumbles upon the investigation of a serial killer, the Ripper. It's creepy, it's horror, and it's perfect for the spooky season so I'm definitely reading this!

Now for my final section: series in progress. These books have at least 2 books of their respective series released and are popular enough that I'm missing out and I can't have that LOL. I've organized these by the next book's release date:

7. A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

Genres: Young Adult, Contemporary, Mystery, Thriller, Crime

Series: A Good Girl's Guide to Murder Trilogy

Next Release: As Good As Dead (#3) releasing on September 28, 2021

The final book of the trilogy is coming out this month so it's basically complete! The main character Pip is researching a closed murder case for her final school project when she starts to discover secrets that someone in her small town desperately wants to keep hidden. The question is: how far will the real killer go to conceal the truth? Bum, bum, BUM! I'm so excited about this one!

8. Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco

Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Witches, Historical Fiction, Romance, Mystery

Series: Kingdom of the Wicked Trilogy

Next Release: Kingdom of the Cursed (#2) releasing on October 26, 2021

LOOK AT THE COVERS. YEAH, I'M READING THIS. Anyways, this one's about a witch named Emilia in Sicily, whose twin sister has just been murdered and she vows to seek vengeance at any cost. Using forbidden dark magic, she summons Wrath, one of the Princes of Hell, who claims to be on her side. But when it comes to the Wicked, nothing is as it seems...

9. The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh

Genres: Young Adult, Historical Fiction, Romance, Vampires, Mystery

Series: The Beautiful Quartet

Next Release: The Righteous (#3) releasing on December 7, 2021

1872. New Orleans. Glittering underworld. Steamy vampire romance and thrilling murder mystery. Stepping a bit out of my comfort zone by putting a vampire-type book on the TBR but here we go! This gives me Twilight vibes and I've only seen the movies (tried to read the first book, couldn't do it) and sometimes a forbidden vampire love story is all you need during the spooky season so I'm going to try this one out!

10. The Inheritance Games by Jennifer L. Barnes

Genres: Young Adult, Contemporary, Mystery, Thriller, Romance

Series: The Inheritance Games Trilogy

Next Release: The Final Gambit (#3) releasing in 2022

The Hawthorne Legacy just came out this month and people are RAVING about it! So, naturally, I must read this. This mystery novel is about Avery, an average high school student, who has just inherited a fortune from a billionaire that she doesn't even know. To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into the sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch--and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. There's a love triangle and I've heard that it's good so I'll definitely be reading this!

So, there you have it. 10 spooky books/series that I plan to read by December!

Planning on reading one of these books? Let me know in the comments below and we can read it together!

Happy Reading!
